DSCI is seeking candidates for a Carpenter for work in Afghanistan. This position requires US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Job Description:
Responsible for fabricating, making and/or repairing a variety of wooden items, which feature details such as curved and contoured surfaces, intricate shapes and designs, interlocking parts, matched panels, inlays and complex joints, panel overlays and others. Works from specifications, blueprints, sketches, drawings, patterns and verbal instructions. Selects, cuts, turns, shapes, joins, bonds, fits and assembles wooden materials and parts using full range of hand and power woodworking machines and techniques. Applies covering such as Formica and linoleum with proper adhesives to counter and tabletops. Pre-cuts thin transparent thermoplastics flat stock to work order dimensions. Plans and lays out work interprets and checks blueprints, plans and sketches; visualizes items; checks and verifies all measurements, parts, etc; makes templates and patterns; select appropriate machines, tools and techniques; plans sequence of work; and makes, assembles and accomplishes complete projects. Develops curved, contoured and shaped surfaces and features; matches panels, grains, contours and complex joints; laminates veneers and overlays. Works with a large variety of hardwoods, softwoods, plywood, veneers, wood substitutes, gluing and bonding agents. Determines, requirements of characteristics, porosity, luster, warp tendency, strength, durability, resistance to water and chemicals all materials. Machines and hand sands to desired smoothness and finish. 40%
Constructs boxes, crates, doors and door frames, windows and window frames, pallets and engine stands, grilles, sashes, louvers, drawers, wardrobes, cabinets, screen doors, steps, loading docks, loading ramps, window screens, arms racks, etc. Makes all types of construction moldings and trim. Performs all types of construction and fabrication of millwork including pre-cutting, sanding, mortising and tensioning, tongue and groove, cutting stops, jacks, etc. Prefabricates small buildings such as storehouses, sheds, etc., in the shop. Incidentally operates 2,000 to 20,000 pound capacity forklift and 1/2-ton pick-up trucks. 30%
Repairs a variety of common metal office furniture and equipment, to include, but not limited to desks, chairs and filing cabinets. Disassembles worn or damaged items. Replaces rollers, latches and hinges. Removes damaged desk and tabletops. Measures, cuts and installs replacement tops, to include those made of Formica. Straightens bent or crooked arms and legs. Refinishes hardwood tabletops. Operates spray paint equipment to paint repaired items. Welds cracks. 30% Performs other duties as assigned. Assignment to duties other than those described above for a period in excess of 30 days constitutes a miss assignment and must be corrected immediately by submission of Standard Form 52 to either detail or permanently assign the employee to those duties. Failure to follow this procedure constitutes a merit system violation.
Skills & Knowledge :
Requires technical knowledge and skills in the proper set-up and operation of all types of manual and power operated tools such as cut-off saws, band saws, table top saws, jig saws, skill saws, planer, jointer, shaper, router, power sander, portable power drills and a variety of hand tools. Operates the equipment in such a manner as to preclude equipment damages and excessive material wastes, achieve critical cutting tolerances and to avoid possible injury to self or others. Requires knowledge of the various classes of lumber and their woodworking properties. Requires knowledge of Formica, linoleum, thermoplastics and other similar materials. Ability to select proper materials for the specific task required. Requires ability to plan, layout and determine grooves, joints, dovetails and contoured features of special purpose cabinetry and decorative woodwork. Ability to utilize blueprints, specifications, schematics, shop mathematics, patterns, jigs, special fixtures and a variety of rules, tapes, squares, miter and angle gauges. Ability to fabricate a variety of wooden utility boxes, buildings, steps, etc. Ability to determine extent of damage and techniques for repair of metal office furniture and equipment. Ability to operate wire-fed welding equipment and painting equipment. Ability to safely operate forklift and motor vehicle equipment.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed indoors in a shop environment with the infrequent requirement of work out-of-doors, subject to inclement weather conditions. Subject to heat. Work area presents frequent exposure to high noise levels, eye and foot safety hazards. Subject to injury from falling objects. Subject to possible cuts, electrical shock, and abrasions from working with power saws and hand tools. Exposed to noise and lung hazards from glue, cements and bonding agents and sawdust particles. Exposed to burns and eye injury. Exposed to paint fumes. Incumbent is required to use hearing protective devices, protective eyewear and safety shoes while working with or near operating woodworking machines during all times of actual hazardous conditions exposure.
